The Maranyundo Initiative has its roots in 2000, with a meeting of Sister Ann Fox and Senator Aloisea Inyumba. The two were attending a Women Waging Peace Conference held at Harvard University. Sister Ann Fox is the founder of the Paraclete Foundation in South Boston, whose mission is to enrich young lives through education. Senator Inyumba was then serving as the Governor of the Nyamata region of Rwanda.
Governor Inyumba understood the importance and need for education for girls in Rwanda and found a receptive response from Sr. Ann. The Maranyundo Initiative was born although at the time neither woman knew this would be its name or how it would become a reality. Senator Inyumba secured the land for the school while Sr. Ann began taking groups of Americans interested in international development to Rwanda. Personal relationships and friendships were formed creating a unique partnership based on mutual respect and a shared vision and optimism for a stronger and smarter Rwanda.
The Maranyundo Initiative is represented by diverse and committed people from the United States and Rwanda. The collaborative nature of the Maranyundo Initiative is paramount to the mission of the organization. Experts and leaders from the US and Rwanda in the fields of education, health, business, development, architecture, government, art and communications, work tirelessly and in partnership toward the common goal of improving the quality of education in Rwanda.
This dynamic coalition of forces has propelled the initiative forward at an exciting pace and what was once a dream is now a reality. The Maranyundo School opened in February of 2008 and serves as a school of excellence. Teachers are implementing student centered teaching methods and students are embracing learning as they prepare to become the next generation of Women leaders in Rwanda.
