As Rwanda strives to enroll and keep more students in school, it is plagued with a severe shortage of qualified teachers. Teachers are consistently under qualified and have little-to-no professional development once they have finished their studies. The Maranyundo Initiative will create a teacher enrichment program that will work with teachers both at the Maranyundo School and throughout the country of Rwanda.
Rwanda embraces and teaches innovative student-centered teaching strategies yet there are many challenges educators face in implementing these trategies. Teachers in Rwanda are ill equipped with the type of students centered teaching methods that are internationally accepted as methods that enable students to thrive. In 2006 only 54% of Rwandan teachers were qualified at even the basic teaching skills. A central challenge to improving the quality of education in Rwanda is to intensify enrichment programs to increase the number of qualified teachers to guarantee quality education for all students.
On-going enrichment and support for teachers and administrators will help translate theory into practice and improve the overall quality of education for all of Rwanda’s children.
