Where MGS Takes You: Axelle Ineza (MGS’21)

From exploring technology and creative problem-solving at the Maranyundo Girls School to pursuing her passions at Tufts University, Axelle Ineza (MGS ’21) continues to build on the foundation she developed at Maranyundo.

For Axelle, a sophomore at Tufts University studying Computer Science and Cognitive and Brain Science, the seeds of innovation were planted at the Maranyundo Girls School (MGS). Through experiences like participating in Debate Club and exploring 3D printing, Axelle developed an interest in technology and creative problem-solving. With support from Bridge2Rwanda, she went on to apply to colleges in the United States, taking a step she credits MGS with giving her the confidence to pursue.

At Tufts, Axelle continues to explore how she can use her skills to make a difference. At a hackathon organized by JumboCode, she learned more about how AI agents can be used to develop practical solutions to real-world challenges.

Last semester, Axelle went to Thailand through Civic Semester, a Tufts University program that allows selected first-year students to spend their first semester focusing on experiential learning and community engagement. She interned at a nonprofit in Thailand that transforms environmental waste, including fallen leaves, into everyday products such as plates and bowls. She helped brainstorm ways to raise awareness of the organization’s work and translated videos into English to help share its mission with a broader audience.

Her interest in using technology to address social issues extends beyond the classroom. During her gap year, Axelle participated in a competition organized by Rwanda’s Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion in partnership with UN Women. Her team created a chatbot designed to help survivors of gender-based violence access support, and they were honored to win the competition.

She also attended the Maranyundo Fall Gala in Boston in October, joining fellow supporters in celebrating the impact of education and the bright future of Maranyundo Girls School students. Through her experiences at MGS, Tufts, and beyond, Axelle continues to explore how technology and innovation can serve others.
