Honoring Black History Month

While Black History Month is mostly celebrated in the U.S., here at Maranyundo, we wanted to use this as a time to celebrate Black Women’s accomplishments on a global scale - especially in Rwanda

So this month, we want celebrate the amazing leaders and pioneers that have been with Maranyundo since the beginning.

Honorable Senator Aloisea Inyumba

The late, Honorable Aloisea Inyumba had a dream of educating more girls in her country of Rwanda. She was instrumental in shaping and transforming a site where many were killed in the Genocide against the Tutsi and turned it into a place of joy where future female leaders would be nurtured and taught.

Sister Felicite Mukashema

Sister Felicite was chosen as the First Head of School of the Maranyundo Girls School by the Benebikira Congregation.

She welcomed the first group of S1/Grade 7 students in 2008 and was Head of School for 3 years until 2010.

Sister Marie Juvenal Mukamurama

Sister Marie Juvenal was the Head of the Maranyundo Girls School from 2010-2019 and now supports all 17 Benebikira schools in Rwanda, including the Maranyundo Girls School. We are so lucky to have her continued leadership..

Sister Laetitia Musanabaganwa

Sister Laetitia began as Head of Maranyundo School in January 2020. By March, she took the necessary steps of sending students & faculty home due to the COVID. During that time, she facilitated for each family to have a smartphone. When students returned to school in November 2020, and continuing today, students are excelling in e-learning with each high school student receiving their own laptop. We are so grateful for her leadership!

Kathy Kantengwa, MD
